The Upper Hudson Library System working with Carol Clingan, Mohawk
Valley Library System, Patricia Stocker,
Catherine Way, Chautauqua Cattaraugus Library System, Robert Hubsher,
Ramapo Catskill Library System, Mickey Cantwell, Suffolk Library
System, and Lisa Areford, Division of Library Development received
an LSTA grant to give public library system staff the skills needed
to facilitate the New Planning for Results model in public libraries
in New York State. Sandra Nelson, the nationally respected consultant
and author of The New Planning for Results, an ALA publication lead
the workshop.
The following is a list of highly skilled consultants who will
work with libraries of all sizes to develop a community based library
long-range plan at no charge to the public library.

Kathryn is the director of the Athens Regional Library System
in Athens, GA, which serves five rural and suburban counties in
Northeast Georgia. She is particularly interested in helping libraries
to move away from traditional services and to provide a framework
to help them grow and change. Kathryn just completed a Specialist
in Library Science degree from the U of SC, with an emphasis on
administration and leadership.
Kathryn's training experiences include library planning, planning
for new facilities, and providing programs for staff during Staff
Day events.

Mickey is the Statistical Analyst for the Suffolk Coopertive
Library System on Long Island. He began his library career 25
years ago surveying library usage at small libraries in Suffolk
County. The bulk of his work involves annual report liaison work,
mapping patron usage by library district, and tracking “contract”
district usage along with helping in the formation of library
districts from “unserved” areas.

David is the Director of the Longwood Public Library in Middle
Island, New York. Longwood is a 54 square mile Library District
in central Suffolk County with a diverse population of 60,000.
He was formerly Head of Reference at Huntington Public Library,
then a Co-Central Library in the Suffolk Cooperative Library System.
During his 20 year tenure at Longwood David has planned facilities,
collections, and programs, intended to make the library a vital
part of the 5 communities it serves. David has been personally
active in many community groups, and has served on the governing
boards of civic, service, and business, as well as historical
and genealogical organizations.
Recently, he represented the library on a community task force
with other civic leaders and elected and appointed officials of
the Town of Brookhaven to gather a consensus on community values
and visions and utilize the principles of Smart Growth to develop
traffic and zoning plans for the community.

Carol is director at Mohawk Valley Library System. She was Deputy
Director at Albany Public Library. One of her first experiences

She was also Director of the Cohoes Public Library. Carol has

Anne Hoffmann is Chief Librarian,
Donnell Library Center, New York Public Library. She has 30 years
experience as a public librarian at The New York Public Library
working in neighborhood branches serving very small communities
to a very large Central Library. She is also currently on the
Baruch College faculty, teaching Public Administration. She participated
in the creation of NYPL’s current five-year plan.
Anne will be guiding NYPL neighborhood
branches in the community planning process. Anne is experienced
in library reorganization planning, strategic and long range planning,
planning for new and renovated facilities, library advocacy, conference
and continuing education programming, and use of volunteers in
libraries. Her training style is participatory and interactive.

Robert is the Director of the Ramapo Catskill Library System
(RCLS), a cooperative public library system with 47 members. He
is a firm believer in the value of strategic planning as a means
of allocating resources. He says that institutions that do not
know "where they are going" never get there.
Robert has been involved in training for over 30 years and has
almost as much experience as a planner. His training style is
based on the knowledge that every group's needs, experiences,
and abilities are different and that most people learn best when
they are actively engaged in the learning process.

Theresa is the Training and Staff Development Coordinator at
the Omaha Public Library. She serves on the library's Administrative
Team, which is primarily responsible for planning and setting
policies. She also works extensively with front line staff as
a trainer. She describes her role as an interpreter/analyst between
the front lines and boardroom.
Theresa has planned and presented programs on a wide variety
of topics including new employee orientation and computer skills

Betty has been the Assistant Director for Branch Libraries at
the Rochester Public Library for two years. Prior to that she
worked at the Denver Public Library. The Rochester branch libraries
were recently studied by the Center for Government Research and
one of the study recommendations was that each of the branches
do an analysis of their own neighborhoods and develop service
plans to meet the neighborhood needs.
Betty will be responsible for overseeing the branch neighborhood
studies and she intends to train the branch librarians to use
PFR. Betty is an experienced trainer and has taught at the community
college level.

in the 3,000 square mile system providing them with information

the Mid-Hudson Library System range from small to large, rural

Susan is the Director of the Hall County (GA) Library System.
The Hall County Library is initiating a new planning process,
which will use PFR. Susan has done some consulting and is currently
considering several consulting opportunities and a part-time teaching
position in public library training. She intends to use PFR in
both situations.
Susan is a trained trainer and uses a variety of styles when
training. She enjoys team training and welcomes the opportunity
to share training with colleagues who can offer other perspectives
on experiences. Training topics include technology, output measures,
Spanish for paraprofessionals, and equity on the Internet.

Patricia is a library consultant specializing in long range planning, project management and grants review and evaluation. She is experienced in Planning for Results and has work with many libraries helping them develop long range plans.
Helping Libraries Use the New Planning for Results Process is supported
