THE RENSSELAERVILLE LIBRARY INTERNET USER POLICY
learning together with being continually responsive to the changing
needs of the community, the Library now offers its patrons the resources
of the Internet pursuant to the following rules and policies:
Adults use the Internet at their own discretion. We do not censor
the content available on the Internet. The Library does not monitor
nor does it control the content of the Internet. Not all sites
provide accurate, complete or current information. Some access
points carry information that the user might find controversial
or inappropriate. We encourage our patrons to be sensitive to the
fact that they are in a public setting.
Parents or legal guardians are responsible for deciding what library
materials and resources are appropriate for their children. As
with other library resources, supervision or restriction of a child’s
access to the Internet is the responsibility of the parent or legal
guardian.
- The Public Access Computers at the Library are available
to all card-holders.
- For Internet access, children under the age of 8 must be
accompanied by an adult.
- Library staff will provide basic instructions to help users
with Internet access as time permits. Please note that staff
do not and cannot have complete knowledge of Internet content
and
may not be familiar with site users access or wish to access.
- The Library currently has two public access computers, accessibility
may be limited as follows:
- a sign-up sheet will be utilized, if necessary, those that
sign in first will be serviced first
- if more than one person wishes to use each computer, users
will be limited to 30 minutes of continuous use
- reservation of time slots will be allowed
- reference searches or use of the computer for school or work
assignments will be given priority over other uses
- Due to the location of the computer and the need for staff
intervention for use, there is no assurance of privacy for
the user.
- The Library does not provide personal email addresses.
- Any patron wishing to print material from the Internet must
first notify the Library Staff. Patrons will be allowed to
print materials from the Internet at the discretion of Library
Staff
at a cost of $.15 per page.
- Users may not:
Download files the Library computer’s hard
drive. Files may be downloaded to a floppy disk provided by
the patron or purchased
from the Library.
Access chat rooms or instant messaging.
Save bookmarks or add shortcuts
to the desktop of the computer.
Invade the privacy of other library
users.
Make an attempt to damage computer equipment or software.
Engage in
any activity that is harassing or defamatory.
Distribute unsolicited
advertising.
Install or download software at the Library terminal.
Use terminals
for any illegal or criminal purpose, including but not limited
to, violation of computer system security, unauthorized
use of computer accounts or access codes.
Use the Internet in any
manner that is disruptive to other patrons.
The Library staff has the authority to enforce this policy and
to deny the use of the Communications Computer and its Internet
access to any patron violating the above rules and policies.
