RCS Community Library Internet Use Policy
rev.
09.18.03
RCSCL provides access to the Internet in keeping with its
mission to be a forum for information and ideas for all members
of the community.
- Residents of the RCS School District have priority
for Internet access.
- Internet users must sign in at the circulation desk
and show appropriate ID each time they go online.
- At time of first Internet use:
- Applicants must sign agreement to follow RCSCL Public
Internet Use Policy.
- Persons under the age of 18 years must be accompanied
by parent/legal guardian who will review the agreement with
the minor and also will sign authorization for Internet use
by the minor.
- Internet sticker will be affixed to patron’s library
card.
- Access to the Internet is unfiltered. The RCSCL
cannot guarantee the accuracy or appropriateness of information
acquired over the Internet. The library does not take responsibility
for any individual’s use of the Internet. Patrons are urged
to use caution about providing identifying information during
any online activity, including electronic mail, chat rooms,
and other direct electronic communications.
- Internet use will be limited according to demand. Work
sessions may be limited to 60 minutes. Recreational and browsing
sessions may be limited to 30 minutes. A patron may sign up
for an additional session if there is no demand. However, there
is a daily limit of 90 minutes for recreational use.
- Patrons may print at a cost of 15 cents per page.
- Bookmarks to websites will be created only at the discretion
of library staff.
- Nothing may be copied or downloaded to the library
computer’s hard drive. To save work, patrons must copy onto
a 3 ˝” disk formatted for PC compatibility.
- Library staff will provide basic instruction to help
users with Internet access. Staff will not be available for
continual support during online sessions. Internet training
sessions will be scheduled on a regular basis.
- The location of the computers and frequent need for
staff support reduces the possibility for privacy.
- As with all formats, patrons must respect copyright
laws and licensing agreements.
- If library staff judges any Internet viewing to be
disruptive to other patrons or library staff, that work session
will be terminated. Further disruptive behavior will result
in the patron being asked to leave the library. Disruptive
behavior for purposes of Internet use is defined as hate speech,
child pornography, obscenity, hacking, and illegal activities.
- Anyone violating this policy may be denied use of the
Internet services. See section 2D of the RCSCL Operating Policies
for procedures.
- If you are concerned about what your child may access
on the Internet, please accompany your child during Internet
work sessions. The best protection for your child is your
presence.
I/We have read
this policy and will follow it.
