Guilderland Public Library

Internet Policy

Advances in technology and changing needs of the community have resulted in the ability of the Guilderland Public Library to provide electronic information beyond the confines of its collection, allowing access to ideas, information and commentary from around the globe. Introduction of the Internet as an information resource greatly enhances the existing print and electronic resources.

The Guilderland Public Library offers basic access to the Internet within the context of its Materials Selection and Collection Development Policy, which states:

  • The Guilderland Public Library acquires materials for the public which will fill educational, informational and recreational needs of the community . . .these materials shall represent the broadest spectrum of print and non-print media available;

And, from the Guiding Principles of the policy as follows:

  • Free and convenient access to the world of ideas, information, and the creative experience is of vital importance to every citizen today.

This policy is also consistent with the Library Bill of Rights, and seeks to protect the privacy and confidentiality rights of every library user.

The Internet is an unregulated medium. In addition to a wealth of tools and resources otherwise unobtainable, the Internet also permits access to information which some may find objectionable or disturbing. Since the Internet is a constantly changing environment, it is not possible for the Library to select or supervise the content. Therefore, all users are advised that Guilderland Public Library cannot be held responsible for accuracy, authenticity, or suitability of content.

Guilderland Public Library affirms that it is the right and responsibility of parents who are concerned about children's use of this or other library resources, in whatever format, to provide guidance to their own children. Youth Services Department computers will contain filtering software. The Library does not act in loco parentis, and is not responsible for enforcing any restrictions which a parent or guardian may place on a minor's (under 16 years of age) use of this resource. Therefore, written parental permission is required for minors' use of the Internet.

Use of the Internet or the Library's computer equipment by any individual to engage in illegal activity or criminal behavior is prohibited. Consistent with the Library's Confidentiality Policy, Safety, Security, and Emergency Procedures Manual and its Unattended Children Policy, the Library reserves the right to end an Internet session if it is deemed disruptive. Further, it reserves the right to take legal action if warranted, to ensure the security of the Library and the safety of patrons and staff.
