Altamont Free Library
Internet Policy
Adopted January 7, 2003
The Altamont Free Library’s commitment to public service
reaches beyond the traditional collections and resources of a public
library. In its mission to provide opportunities for lifelong learning,
the library is continually responsive to the changing needs of
the community.
To maximize availability of this service for all potential users,
please follow these procedures and guidelines:
[1] In accordance with its mission to provide materials and services
for the entertainment and education for all people in the community,
the library provides access to the Internet.
[2] While the Internet provides useful and interesting information;
it also contains inaccurate, controversial and even offensive material.
The Library cannot be held responsible for the accuracy, authenticity
or suitability of Internet content.
[3] Due to the limited number of computers, the Library reserves
the right to enforce procedures to provide an equitable share of
Internet access for all patrons. See the circulation staff for
current procedures.
- Access to the computer word station is limited to
one hour per day and there can be only one reservation at a time.
- Patrons may reserve a computer workstation by phone or in person
at least ½ hour in advance, subject to availability.
- Late
arrivals forfeit the unused portion of their reserved time. If
another patron is waiting to use the computer, individuals
more than 15 minutes late lose their entire reserved time.
- There will be a maximum
of two people at a computer workstation at a time.
[4] All library customers are to act in a responsible and ethical
manner, consistent
with all policies of the library and, for minors, consistent also
with parental and legal guardian guidance. In accordance with federal
and state laws and regulations, patrons are not permitted to use
computers for any illegal or criminal purpose, including, but not
limited to, accessing legally obscene materials, harassment or
stalking, unauthorized access to computer systems, or in a manner
disruptive to other people’s work.
[5] Patrons who violate these Internet policies risk losing library
privileges including, but not limited to, their right to access
the Internet.
[6] Parents and guardians are responsible for monitoring their
child’s use of the Internet. Any restriction of a child’s
access is the responsibility of the parent/guardian, not the library
staff. When using the Internet, children age 8 and under must be
accompanied by an adult.
- The library strongly encourages parents to supervise
their children’s use of the Internet and other electronic
resources. Selected resources for parents include: “Child
Safety on the Information Highway” and “The
Librarian’s
Guide to Cyberspace for Parents and Kids.”
[7] The library
protects the rights to privacy and confidentiality with respect
to information sought or received and resources
consulted, borrowed, acquired or transmitted. However, the
physical arrangement of the computer terminals makes it impossible
to
ensure privacy.
[8] Library staff will show patrons how to access the Internet
and explain basic navigational commands. Lengthy one-on-one tutorials
are not possible due to staffing conditions.
- In order to save files, a 3-½ inch floppy disk
for IBM PC must be purchased at the circulation desk.
- Printing fees are $0.10 (ten cents) per page.
