The following online databases are provided by the Upper Hudson Library System and Albany Public Library as a Central Library service for member libraries and public library card holders in New York State's Albany and Rensselaer Counties. All databases are available from home with your Library card unless otherwise stated.

Descriptions of the Reference Databases

Ancestry Library Edition

Ancestry® Library Edition, one of the most important genealogical collections available today, has unparalleled coverage of the U.S. and the U.K., including census, vital, church, court, and immigration records, as well as record collections from Canada and other areas. The Ancestry Library Edition collection has approximately 4,000 databases including key collections such as U.S. federal census images and indexes from 1790 to 1930; the Map Center containing more than 1,000 historical maps; American Genealogical Biographical Index (over 200 volumes), Daughters of the American Revolution Lineage (over 150 volumes), The Great Migration Begins: Immigrants to New England, 1620-1630, Social Security Death Index, WWI Draft Registration Cards, Federal Slave Narratives, and a strong Civil War collection.

HeritageQuest Online

HeritageQuest Online is an essential collection of unique material for both genealogical hobbyists and professionals, with coverage dating back to the late 1700s. HeritageQuest Online combines digital, searchable images of U.S. federal census records with the digitized version of the popular UMI® Genealogy & Local History collection and other valuable content. Along with U.S. federal census images and indexes from 1790 to 1930, HeritageQuest Online offers more than 20,000 book titles, including nearly 8,000 family histories and over 12,000 local histories, in addition to the more than 250 primary source documents such as tax lists, city directories, and probate records.

Remote access is available only to Troy Public Library card holders. To access HeritageQuest Online from a computer outside the library, Troy patrons only - Click Here - and enter the 14 digit barcode number that appears on the back of your Troy Public Library card.

Jewish Data

Jewish Data, one of the largest professionally compiled Jewish genealogical resources of its kind currently available, contains over 100,000 records, including images of tombstones, school yearbook pages and Citizen Declaration documents. New records are added on an ongoing basis.

EBSCOhost databases:

MasterFILE Select, a multidisciplinary database designed specifically for public libraries, provides full text for more than 750 general reference publications with coverage dating as far back as 1984. Covering virtually every subject area of general interest, MasterFILE Select also includes 35 full text reference books and an Image Collection of 192,999 photos, maps and flags. This database is updated daily via EBSCOhost.

Primary Search provides full text for more than 60 popular magazines for elementary school research. All full text articles included in the database are assigned a reading level indicator (Lexiles). Full text information dates as far back as 1990.

EBSCO Animals provides in-depth information on a variety of topics relating to animals. The database consists of indexing, abstracts, and full text records describing the nature and habitat of familiar animals.

Funk & Wagnalls New World Encyclopedia provides over 25,000 encyclopedic entries covering a variety of subject areas.

TOPICsearch allows researchers to explore social, political, and economic issues, scientific discoveries, and other popular topics discussed in today’s classrooms. TOPICsearch contains full text for over 78,000 articles from more than 3,000 diverse sources, including nearly 1,450 full text periodicals.

General Science Collection offers full text coverage for more than 60 of the most popular science publications, and provides information on all aspects of the scientific world. Full text information dates back as far as 1992.

Home Improvement Resource Center is the definitive online tool for home improvement assistance, including: maintenance, remodeling, electrical work, plumbing, wood projects, outdoor improvements, decorating home & garden, etc. This comprehensive resource contains 26 major reference works in full text with more than 10,000 images (none found available online anywhere else). Additionally, the database contains full-text magazines (e.g. This Old House).

Literary Reference Center is a comprehensive database that provides users with a broad spectrum of information on thousands of authors and their works across literary disciplines and time frames. Literary Reference Center is a full text database that combines information from major respected reference works. Includes author summaries, plot summaries, literary criticisms, books reviews and author interviews.

Reference USA, a comprehensive directory of business and residential telephone numbers and addresses, is searchable by name, geographic area or zip code.  Find company size, top personnel, credit rating, yearly sales ranges, and more.

Times Union

The Times Union online archives contain most locally written stories published since 1986. Headlines and summaries can be viewed for no charge. Your public library has a special arrangement with the Times Union to view full stories on-site in the library, though not from home or office. Please ask a librarian for assistance.

Literature Resource Center - LRC provides access to biographies, bibliographies, and critical analyses of authors from every age and literary discipline. Includes real estate contracts, wills, pre-marital agreements, bankruptcy, divorce, landlord tenant and many others. Also included is a comprehensive attorney state directory and a dictionary of legal definitions explained in laymen's language.

Children's Literature Comprehensive Database

Children's Literature Comprehensive Database offers access to more than 155,000 reviews of children's books -- all full text searchable from 30 review sources -- as well as access to entries for more than 266,000 awards, prizes, best book list and reading list entries. The database also provides access to over 28,000 book jacket images.

Kids Search, a search interface designed especially for students in grades K through 5 and powered by EBSCOhost, searches the American Heritage Dictionary, EBSCO Animals, Funk & Wagnalls New World Encyclopedia, and EBSCO's Newspaper Source and Primary Search databases.
