Computer Use Policy
1. Before using the computer for the first
time, a patron must register by reading and signing a copy of the Computer use Policy. A
list of registered users will be kept at the circulation desk. Users must have a library
card valid at the Petersburgh Public Library. Basic Internet instruction will be provided
in the form of Internet workshops presented by Library trustees and or staff.
2. Users must sign in and sign out in the
Computer Log Book located at the Circulation desk.
3. Computer time will be available in one hour
blocks. A patron may reserve no more than one hour of time a day. Printing must be
completed within the allotted hour. Reservations will be held for ten minutes beyond the
reserved time, then automatically canceled. A patron may use the computer beyond one hour
if no one else requests it. However if someone else arrives they must relinquish it within
ten minutes.
4. Patrons may not bring software from home or
download it from the internet.
5. All data must be stored on a personal data
disk. Only disks purchased from the Library may be used and if removed from the Library
they may not be returned. To prevent the introduction of viruses, disks from home may not
be used.
6. Patrons should NOT turn off the computer at
any time. See the librarian if there is a problem.
7. Patrons may not physically or
electronically attach anything to library equipment. Patrons may not save bookmarks or add
shortcuts to the desktop of the Internet workstation.
8. A printer is available. Five pages may be
printed at no charge. Beyond five pages, the cost is five cents per page. The printer is
not intended to be used as a copy machine, these fees are for single copies only.
9. No more than two people may use a computer
at a time.
10. Children under ten years of age must be
supervised by an adult, unless an exception is granted by the Librarian.
11. Patrons are fiscally responsible for any
damage they cause to the computers, related equipment, or software used. Parents are
responsible for damage caused by children. The Petersburgh Public Library is not
responsible for loss of data or consequent damages arising out of the computer or library
software.
12. Library equipment may not be used to
duplicate copyrighted software. This is a crime. The library is not responsible for a
users illegal actions. Patrons must respect licensing agreements, copyright laws and
"netiquet" while using the Internet.
13. The Petersburgh Public Library does not
warrant information found on the internet to be authoritative.
14. Cyberpatrol, a blocking software package
is installed on Library computers. This is intended to block inappropriate sites from
children. Any one using the computer over the age of 18 may have the filtering software
turned off. Patrons may be asked to provide the librarian with photo ID to prove they are
adults.
15. Failure to abide by any portion of this
policy will result in the loss of computer privileges. Computer privileges will also be
suspended if a patron owes more than $2 in library fines.
