Kids Cookin' by the Book in TroySummer 2005 Young cooks at Troy Public Library use measurements and muscles to make homemade ice cream, after learning the history of this favorite sweet treat. When the ice cream was ready, kids compared it to two versions of store-bought ice cream in blind taste tests. A local grocery store brand won the taste test by a small margin. The kids also tasted dehydrated astronaut ice cream, and decided that the astronauts could keep it! (click to see larger images) In other activities of the four-day Food Group programs, kids used the book Eating Fractions (Bruce McMillan) to practice their multiplication, division, addition and subtraction skills with m & m's, waffles and meatballs. Kids also met local beekeeper Rick Greene of Ballston Apiaries and got to see and hear some bees in a honey comb. Later, kids tasted different varieties of honey and followed a recipe to make a vegetable dressing using honey. They dipped veggies in the dressing and apples in the honey for some healthy and yummy treats. They also tasted nine different kinds of apples and voted the Pink Lady as the best tasting and best textured. Apples dipped in honey were preferred over apples with peanut butter or apples with cinnamon. Finally, kids were treated to a live musical performance of songs about vegetables and fruit while creating their own sculptures out of the same. Throughout the four day event kids practiced yoga and were read to each day |
