Wood Block
Corner of John Street and Main Street
Hoosick Falls, NY

Wood Blcck

Constructed in the 1870s, the Wood Block of businesses has changed hands and fronts over its long life, from grocery markets, to a postoffice, a barbershop, a saloon, doctors' office, law offices, pharmacy, a bank, a clothing store, and a five and dime. On the third floor was a ballroom where Harriet Hoctor learned to dance. By 1918, she was performing there. Vaudeville shows, musical concerts, and traveling dramatic shows were held there.

In the early 1980s, a partnership of local people calling themselves the Wood Block Associates, purchased the block. Many businesses continue to keep this block flourishing. There are plans to recreate the second and third floors to their former functional glory.
