On the corner of Church and John Streets stands the Thorpe Drug Store
today just as it did in the 1800s. It was owned by Geo. E. Thorpe
in 1877, W.L. Thorpe in 1886, R.W. Thorpe in 1927 and Bob Thorpe in
1951. W. Clark Thorpe sold the business to pharmacists James Monahan
and Ronald Broswski in 1983. When Ron retired Jim bought the business
in 1998. At one time the Thorpe Drug Store featured a soda fountain.
On
March 20, 1915 two of the largest blocks in Hoosick Falls, the Easton
Thorpe building and the Lurie building were completely destroyed and
several other structures were partially damaged by the worst fire
in the history of the village. The fire took out buildings on the
lower eastside of Church Street and John Street as far as the Dougherty
block( now the Woods Mowing and Reaping establishment) on Main Street.
The present Thorpe block was rebuilt on the fire gutted structure.
