All
Saints Episcopal Church was formed as a missionary endeavor from St.
Peter's Episcopal Church, Bennington, VT. In 1857, the Reverend G.B.
Manser began coming by horse and buggy to conduct services in the
stone schoolhouse. This building was soon outgrown and members of
the Tibbits family began the construction of the beautiful parish
church in 1864. A temporary wooden tower was constructed which gave
way to the stone tower as it stands today.
Upon
completion of the stone tower, the Tibbits family gave a set of pealing
bells which they purchased at the Paris Exposition in 1867. The bells
had won first prize in Florence, Italy. The bells are designed with
relief pictures; one with Madonna and Child and the other with the
Crucifix. The small bell at the top of the tower was purchased in
Munich, Germany and dates back to 1578.
All
Saints cost the Tibbits family $20,000, not including the cost of
the bells. The brown sandstone on the church was brought from Portland,
CT. The other stones were native to the local Briggs farm.
