Craver Farmstead

Located in the northeast corner of the Town of East Greenbush, the Craver Farmstead is a 40 acre property with a farmhouse and a barn. Built sometime prior to 1790, the farmhouse is one of the oldest and best preserved examples of Federal period architecture in Rensselaer County. In the spirit of Federal style architecture, the farmhouse is characterized by balance and symmetry.

The Craver Farmstead reflects the significant role that agriculture once played in Rensselaer County. On the original property of 225 acres, John W. Craver raised hay, oats, rye, corn and potatoes. He cultivated 150 apple and 100 pear trees and grew strawberries. He raised livestock, including cattle, horses, poultry and pigs. Farm produce included butter, eggs, pork and cider.

The property remained in the Craver family until 1942, when it was purchased by Muriel Southworth and renovated extensively. In 1964 it was purchased by the Wilsons. The current owner, Michael Codner, purchased the farmstead in 1980.
