Bethlehem Grange

Situated on the south side of Route 396 at Beckers Corners where it meets 9W, the Bethlehem Grange served many purposes for the great number of farmers in the town. They needed a political organization to represent them in the government and promote their products, a place to discuss and learn more about farming, and a place for social events. Bethlehem Grange No. 137 was organized in 1874 in Albany but the travel was inconvenient so a hall was rented at Beckers Corners. Jurian Winne, prominent local sheep-herder, was the first master. In 1875 the grange store opened which supplied groceries and farm provisions like feed and nails, but the store was discontinued in 1966. Fire destroyed this building and the present structure was built in 1921.

The whole family could belong to the Grange since there is a Junior program. Suppers are still held there for the public. The Grangers continue to push for legislation that will help farmers and country people and devote more time to community services.
