Freight Station

The D & H Freight House runs alongside the tracks on the right side of Kenwood from Delmar just before it intersects with New Scotland Avenue. The first railroad here was the Albany & Susquehanna which John I. Slingerland worked so hard to bring into the region. The Delaware and Hudson Railway took this line over and then Canadian Pacific Railway bought the D & H in 1991. Trains no longer run along the tracks but the railroad imprint remains. The printing company building that once produced railroad tickets and schedules is still here. Many of the large Victorian homes lining Kenwood Avenue were once owned by railroad executives.

New York Central spent two years building a major freight classification yard near Selkirk that opened in 1924. It combined with Pennsylvania Railroad in 1968 to become Penn Central and upgraded the Selkirk rail yard to become the most advanced in the nation.

Samuel V. B. Haswell, who once managed the store for the Tawasentha Grange (corner of Borthwick and Delaware), often went to the railroad freight stations and bought up unclaimed freight to sell at the store.
