Meeting convened at 9:05 am

Minutes: Nancy Pieri moved and Lenny Zapala seconded that the minutes from May 3, 2002 approved. The motion was carried.

UHLS: Phil Ritter
Several applications have already come in for the position of training specialist.

Rachel presented a draft of workshops for 2003 (see attached).

Sara spoke about Books By Mail. It was originally an outreach grant from the state. We have a $10,000 contract with SALS for this program. Sara put together a lot of material to analyze the efficiency of this program (see attached) It seems to be an expensive service for possibly 25 people who use the service. Some ideas offered were: reimbursement of postage to library; partnering with Meals on Wheels to disburse the books; working with Senior Citizen centers to disburse the books. Money saved by the elimination of the service would go for another program. Deborah Canzano made a motion that Books by Mail be discontinued and Sara is to contact the people involved and other arrangements for delivery of books will be made. Barbara Schoen seconded the motion and it was carried.

Crandall Library approached UHLS with partnership in an LSTA grant. (see attached) The training would take place in local libraries. Barbara Nichols Randall moved that UHLS cooperate with Crandall Library and the Consumer Health part of SALS; Lenny Zapala seconded the motion and it was carried.

CIPA ruling says that funds may not be withheld if filters are not placed on computers. An internet safety policy needs to be in place by October. children my not give out personal information.

The contract with Velocity (the courier service) expires in December 2002, so an RFP for the courier service has been sent out to all courier services in the area. It is also announced on the UHLS web site.

The pool collection distribution went well, but there are still a lot of books left. It will continue indefinitely until all avenues of disbursement are exhausted. Mary Fellows is to schedule another meeting with the pool collection committee.

UHLS Administration: N Pieri
Trustee of the year was discussed and new definitions of the honor roll. The revision of the by laws of UHLS will be heavy on the agenda. The Annual Report must be submitted on time or there will be consequences.

Services: C. Trager
Recommendations for program of the year were considered. Programs need justification and documentation in order to be seriously considered. BRUN received in the rural category and GUIL received for suburban.

The proposition passed and now a transition period needs to be discussed with city hall.

Nuts& Bolts:
BETH will have there 5th Annual Staff Development Day - Diversity of Work Styles.

The GUIL George Washington exhibit has been taken down. They will be celebrating the 10th anniversary of being in the library building. Planning for Results will begin in the fall.

SNLK is planning another trip to Ireland. A $25 donation per booked person will be donated to the library by Celtic Tours.

COHS announced that they are receiving paperback carousels from COLN.

RCSC announced that the Gates computers freeze with sound blasts and Magic School Bus and the machines have to be rebooted. COHS and MEND also have similar problems.

Albany Rural Cemetery wants public card catalogues free.

Old Business:
The following officers were elected with the secretary casting 1 vote for the ballot:

Secretary - M. Morris

A two year term of office was recommended. There was a round of approval for the job Bob Jaquay has done over the past two years.

New Business:
The Director's Conference will be held October 4th possibly at the Prine House in Latham. Some ideas for the conference are marketing the library to the local community using the annual report; the FBI to discuss the Patriot's act; and also get the ACLU point of view.

The Allan Chartok media project was also discussed as a separate idea.

Motion for adjournment was made by Nancy Pieri and seconded by Jeff Cannell. The meeting adjourned at 10:20 am and the next meeting was scheduled for August 2nd, 2002 at UHLS.
