Pre- and post-meeting
Representatives of thirteen libraries reviewed children’s
and YA books from publishers, discussed the books with one another,
and had the opportunity to choose among them for their own collections.
UHLS updates
Mary noted that legislators restored the budget for libraries and
schools, and thanked youth services staff for everything they did
to help lobby.
Storytelling Camp Grant is winding down. At least two libraries
are continuing the momentum through a curriculum writing project
funded by the Teachers Center, a student put on the program at Grafton
Lakes State Park to regularly tell stories this summer, and the
campers continuing workshops through the summer.
The Sky Camp grant writing is underway.
Das Puppenspiel, our summer arts grants project, has been scheduled.
Publicity will be out in early June.
Summer Reading Program
Mary explained the “One In A Million” statewide initiative
to enroll a million kids in SRP. Discussion ensued about the home
and library prize book collections given by Scholastic to each county
(one 50-6 book collection for kids, and one for libraries). It was
decided to split both the home and library collections into 5 collections
of ten+ books. Mary will call for your slips in mid-August. Then
she will draw from the slips to get one child from each of five
libraries in Albany County, and one child from each of five libraries
in Rensselaer County. The child will get the ten+ book home collection,
and their library will get the ten+ book library collection.
Each system has also received an extra $2500 for SRP, to use as
desired. Mary has allocated $650 for “I’m One in a Million”
buttons to be used an incentive. As per the group’s decision,
leftover money from the buttons will be allocated to each library.
Kids Pac
After a few minutes of discussion and attempt to look at Kids Pacs,
it was decided that a few people would work on the customizing of
the UHLS Kids Pac and report back to the YSAC. Jen McIntosh and
Beth Bomba volunteered. Mary will solicit other volunteers from
those not present for a group of four or five. There is no further
update on when Dynix will release Kids Pac, nor do we know when
ASC and UHLS will be ready to work on it, but we will do our work
so that when they’re ready, we’re ready.
