UHLS Updates
September 25 Home School Workshop - Twenty-six
librarians, home school parents, and school librarians participated
in the September 25 youth services workshop “Jigsaw Jockey:
How Schools and Home Schools Fit into the Public Library Puzzle.”
Presenter Dr. Rebecca Rupp shared statistics and motivations of
the home school movement, New York guidelines, and ideas for supporting
home school parents. Mary expressed thanks to Sharon Hodges for
recommending Dr. Rupp. Wrapping up the day, a panel discussion of
school and public librarians described common goals, best approaches
for collaborative projects with school librarians, and successful
strategies.
Arts grant –The Albany/Schenectady arts
grant for Das Puppenspiel, a puppetry group from Westfield, NY,
is written and submitted. Mary reminded the group that today is
the deadline for Rensselaer County libraries to indicate their interest
in participating in the Arts Center of the Capital Region grant,
also for Das Puppenspiel.
Storytelling camp – The LSTA grant Imagination
River Storytelling Camp grant is underway. Participating libraries
are Altamont, Albany Public Main, Castleton, and Troy Lansingburg.
First meetings are being held.
Riverway Storytelling Festival – Mary reported
progress on the festival including contracting with Laura Simms,
a world-renowned storyteller from NYC, as the headline storyteller.
Laura will be doing the main performance on Saturday night, and
will also offer a master class on Saturday afternoon, something
in which she has particular expertise. The dates for the festival
are April 3-5, 2003.
NYLA – Mary reminded the group that the
New York Library Association conference is this coming week and
offered a car pool opportunity for Wednesday morning.
Horizon migration – The decision about when
to go live will be made next Monday.
Idea for craft table – Mary proposed that
at each meeting we have a craft table where participants can bring
a sample of a craft that was particularly successful copies of the
directions for it. No one will be assigned or asked to do this.
Rather, anyone can bring his or her sample and directions anytime.
Next meeting – best books of 2002 will be
the topic, presented by Mary as a result of her work on the Notable
Books for Children committee. Vendors and working with vendors will
also be covered in the December meeting.
Summer Reading Program Statistics
Mary discussed briefly the increase in stats this summer. She will
send out details in a memo.
Storytime Sharing
Polly Hartman, Julia Doellefeld, Beverly Provost, Lee Ricci, and
Ann-Marie Cicchinelli shared easy-to-make props and clever techniques
for making stories come alive to young listeners.
News From You/ You Name It
ulia Doellefeld invited participants to the Fall Book Harvest from
2-4 at the Pruyn House on Sunday, sponsored by the Children’s
Literature Connection. Joyce Laisoa told about her participation
in the National Book Festival in Washington DC.
Mary announced a new agenda item for YSAC meetings: Great Reads,
a 15 minute opportunity for anyone to share particularly great children’s
or YA books recently read. Sharing these will improve our reader’s
advisory ability, give us ideas for purchases and programs, and
reconnect us with one of the things we love about our work.
Performer mini-showcase
Barbara Bennett, local paper artist, presented her programs, available
for libraries. Mary has copies of her flyer. A sampling of possibilities
easily paired with books includes 1000 paper cranes, origami flower
gardens, star books and fish kites. Barbara is available at 355-5960,
and has performed at Guilderland Public Library as well as other
UHLS libraries.
