Meeting Notes
Attendees: Paul Hicok, Pat Nonamaker, Barbara Nichols Randall,
Phil Ritter, Deborah Canzano, Lenny Zapala, Jeff Cannell, Barbara
Kubli, Jo-Ann Benedetti (notes).
Online Databases: Rachel distributed the notes from previous CLAC
and Adult Services Advisory Council (ASAC) meetings, plus a compilation
of the Youth Services (YSAC) and ASAC recommendations for the 2004
Online Database program. After discussion, the group agreed to
keep:
- BIP, EBSCO, and Reference USA
- Times Union – reduce to
$1,000
- Learnatest – they would like to know
if there is a way Learnatest can be used on Gates computers,
which does not allow cookies – this
is an issue at COHS; we should reevaluate use of the product
after one year; it is very important that we promote and
train this year.
To drop:
- Hoovers, Grangers, Grolier
UHLS has budgeted $27K for online databases; APLM budgeted $95K.
Barbara Kubli made a motion and Lenny Zapala seconded to purchase
an encyclopedia. 4-yes; 2-no; motion to have an online encyclopedia
carried. Use of the encyclopedia should be evaluated again next
year to determine if it is necessary.
It was agreed that we could not afford the NYT Historical backfile,
LitFinder or WilsonWeb.
Deborah Canzano made a motion and Lenny Zapala seconded that we
have BIP, EBSCO, Learnatest, Reference USA, Times Union, the Children’s
Comprehensive Literature Database, Oxford Reference Online, and
World Book. The motion passed unanimously. Rachel will get World
Book down to $15K if possible.
The Central Library will pay $94,180 for BIP, EBSCO, Learnatest,
Reference USA, and Times Union ($1K).
UHLS will pay for CLCD, Oxford, World Book, and Chapter a Day.
Phil noted that we are still not sure what the state budget is
going to be next year, which will have an effect on the UHLS budget.
Jeff Cannell agreed that this would have an impact of 10-20% on
the Central Library budget, too.
The group would like UHLS to explore ways to statistics from our
web site on database use instead of relying on individual vendors
to supply them. Rachel will ask Peter if WebTrends can do this.
Central Library budget:
Database access – online databases for $94,180
Reference Support - $20,000
Availability of collection –$28,931
Total - $143,111
Deborah Canzano made a motion and Pat Nonamaker seconded to approve
the above budget; passed unanimously.
The group discussed how best to market the databases, perhaps
with leftover funds? At some point, we may want to hire a PR firm,
but in the meantime, free advertising venues should be explored
first. It was agreed to bring this topic to the Directors Association
for further discussion.
Adjourned at 10:45 AM.
