Attendees: Paul Hicok, Phil Ritter (notes), Deb
Canzano, Barbara Kubli, Jeff Cannell, Pat Nonamaker, Jo-Ann Benedetti
Absent: Barbara Randall, Lenny Zapala
Chair Hicok called the meeting to order at 3:15 p.m.
Hicok asked Baum to review the information and options regarding
the UHLS/Central Library Online Databases for 2003. It was noted
that we spent $97,480 for the online databases during 2002 and that
it will cost $116,045 to maintain the same databases in 2003. It
was noted that during 2002, the CLAC had budgeted $85,000 from Central
Library funds and $15,000 from UHLS funds to pay for the online
databases.
After review and discussion of this report, Cannell offered to
spend $10,000 more from Central Library funds (i.e. $95,000) to
pay for online databases, giving a total budget of $110,000 for
2003. A number of options were discussed, focusing primarily on
dropping Grangers and Hoovers in favor of adding access to the Times
Union in some way. There was some discussion of replacing World
Book with Groliers if that would save money. Baum agreed to negotiate
with the Times Union, to check on the cost of Groliers, and to negotiate
with all the other databases.
Canzano moved that we maintain the current databases as they are
with the following exceptions: cancel Grangers and Hoovers, consider
replacing World Book with Groliers, add some kind of article access
to the Times Union, and spend no more than $110,000 for online databases
in 2003. Kubli seconded, and the motion received unanimous approval.
Cannell moved that if Baum is able to negotiate a reduction in
the expenditures below $110,000, that the Central Library and UHLS
equally split any savings that are realized. Nonamaker seconded,
and the motion received unanimous approval.
It was agreed that communication regarding this matter could be
done via email and that there was no need to set another meeting
at this time. If we find that we must meet, we will try to do so
during the first week of December.
The meeting was adjourned at 4:25 p.m.
