|
| Young Adult author Alex Flinn visited the Guilderland High School on April 28, 2005 to meet with Language Arts classes, the English Club, and participants in the Reading Connections @ the Guilderland Public Library family book discussion program. GHS Librarian Cheryl Charbonneau and Guilderland Public Library Teen Services Librarian Trevor Oakley have been collaborators in the Reading Connections program and Flinn's visit was integrated into the program as an extra-special bonus. |
Reading Connections is a program that is open to all 8th and 9th graders and their parents, that promises free books, exclusive author visits, and a really small time commitment. We’re forming two groups-one of 8th graders and one of ninth graders-and each group will read four books over the course
of the school year (you get to keep the books!). It’s a great opportunity to get families reading together and talking about some great teen books!
For the eighth grade, after reading a book, the students will have their book discussion in the Farnsworth Middle School Learning Center during their tutorial period (period 3). The parents’ group will meet the same evening at the Guilderland Public Library with the Teen Services Librarian (Trevor). The third book we’ll read will be chosen by the group and will be discussed virtually! These three discussions will take place on Thursdays. David Lubar (Hidden Talents, Flip) is the visiting author for this group, and he’ll be here March 18th and 19th! Also, the books you read count for your required reading!

The ninth grade group (students and parents) will meet at the Guilderland Public Library in separate locations. The students will meet with Guilderland High School Librarian Mrs. Charbonneau, and the parent group will meet with the Guilderland Library’s Teen Services Librarian. These three discussions will take place on Thursdays at 7 pm. The second book we’ll be reading will be discussed virtually! Chris Crutcher is the visiting author for this group, and he’ll be joining us May 20th and 21st!
