Lucy Hurston’s Visit

May 10th, 2007

It has been a wonderful week in Big Read land!

Lucy Anne Hurston kicked things off with THREE appearances on May 4th.  First, she went to Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk High school and spoke to 77 students and teachers during a brunch.  In the afternoon, she spoke at a tea in her honor at Guilderland Public Library, and in the evening, answered questions at SUNY Albany’s Page Hall after a showing of the film “Their Eyes Were Watching God.”

What energy!  Lucy is not only a great speaker, but a genuinely thoughful woman.  During the tea, she started at the back of the room and greeted everone there with a warm smile and words of appreciation for their attendance.  Afterwards she autographed copies of her book, Speak, So You Can Speak Again: The Life of Zora Neale Hurston  - a multimedia tribute to her aunt. Please check out the photographs posted in the “photos” section of the Big Read webpage.
