Online Collections of
the Upper Hudson Library System
Global NICHE project
The original NICHE project (funded under Library Services and Technology
Act for 1997-1998), located and assessed the number, size and content of local history
collections in all 29 UHLS member libraries, and produced an electronic finding aid to
those collections. As a continuation of NICHE, Global NICHE identified rare and important
documents in the collections of six libraries - Berlin, Castleton, Cohoes,
Nassau, Rensselaerville, and Voorheesville -
digitized the documents, mounted them on the NICHE web page, and made local communities
aware of these resources through collaborative public programs.
A Project Archivist visited each of the six sites to work with library
staff and project partners on detailed identification of essential materials. The
documents and photographs selected were electronically scanned and mounted on the NICHE
web site.
Participating libraries partnered with museums and historical societies in
their communities, including the Rensselaer County
Historical Society, historians from the City of Cohoes,
the Village of Berlin, the Village of Voorheesville, the Town of New Scotland Historical
Society, and the Rensselaerville Historical Society to create public programs that
highlighted these and other rare documents.
