Stone School House
Corner of NY 7 and NY 22 (South)
Hoosick, NY

Stone School House

Built in 1842 at the request of Mrs. George Tibbits, this schoolhouse is the best known landmark in the Town of Hoosick. Feeling the need to educate the children of their tenant farm, Mrs. Tibbits hired John Grant, an Irish stonemason, to construct the schoolhouse.

Supported solely by the Tibbits family, in 1879 it became part of District #15 after the New York Legislature realigned the assembly districts. There are no records of it ever being supported by common school district taxes. The last class was held in 1917.

Source of historic text: At the schoolhouse, the history is framed on the walls.
