Atlas and Geography Internet Sites

This page contains selected atlas and geography Internet sites. If there are other related Internet sites that you would like added to this page, please contact the Webmaster.

  • Atlapedia Online - If you're looking for basic, easy-to-read political and geographic maps of the world or a particular country, this site can't be beat. Along with each map you'll also find demographic, economic and historical information.
  • Capitals.com - The maps on this site are pretty bare-bones, but it's easy to navigate and the statistics on each country are incredibly detailed. And you won't want to miss the CIA's World Factbook 2000, the ultimate almanac (well, according to the CIA). The information it contains has been so fully analyzed, it's now intelligence.
  • Earth and Moon Viewer - One of the most captivating on the Web, this site shows what the earth really looks like at any given moment, if you're standing on the sun or the moon. You can also customize this real-time image to include topography and weather patterns.
  • Historical Atlas of the Twentieth Century - Entertaining graphics make this one of the most interesting interactive map sites on the Web. Select a geographical area and a time period to generate a map. Then click on one of the icons at the bottom of the page to see how that part of the world was affected by that era's urban growth, war and politics.
  • Map Collections:1500-1999 - This huge collection of maps assembled by the Library of Congress is as much about history as it is about geography. Whether you're looking for a particular rare map - say, an 1892 map of the Indian and Oklahoma territories - or general information about environmental conservation or the history of American commerce, you can find it here.
  • MapQuest - Know where you're going but not how to get there? Type in an address and MapQuest will supply a street map, driving directions, even an aerial photo, for almost any location in the U.S. or Europe. For longer trips, use the Road Trip Planner to find lodging and to plan sight-seeing activities.
  • Perry-Castaneda Library Map Collection - Whether you're in search of a rare historical map or something more recent, check out the Perry-Castaneda Library, which has one of the largest collections of maps on the Web. It offers thousands of political, topographic and demographic maps from around the world.
